Two resistors are connected in parallel and a voltage of 200V is applied to the terminals. The total current taken is 25A and the power dissipated in one of the resistors is 1500W. What is the resistance of each element?

Solution :
Circuit for above problem is drawn below :-

Given
Supplied voltage, Vₛ = 200 V
Power dissipated in R₁, P₁ = 1500 W
Voltage across R₁, V₁ = Vₛ = 200 V
Let current flowing through R₁ be I₁.
P₁ = V₁ . I₁
Or, 1500 W = 200V . I₁
Or, I₁ = 1500/200
I₁ = 7.5A
So, R₁ = V₁/I₁ = 200/7.5
∴ R₁ = 26.67 Ω

Let current flowing through R₂ be I₂.
I₂ = 25A - I₁ = 25A - 7.5A = 17.5A
Voltage across R₂, V₂ = Vₛ = 200 V
So, R₂ = V₂/I₂ = 200/17.5
∴ R₂ = 11.43 Ω

Hence the resistances are R₁ = 26.67 Ω and R₂ = 11.43 Ω.
